Kannemeyer, De Melo to provide the banker

January 2023

Jack Milner

It always helps to have one runner bettors can rely on as a banker for the day and the trainer and jockey combination of Dean Kannemeyer and Keagan de Melo has provided many a banker of late.

Lots of people will be turning to that combination at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Wednesday, hoping Princess Jo can fill the role in Race 4, a FM 70 Handicap over 1500m.

Princess Jo is lightly raced and looks to have plenty of scope for improvement. The three-year-old daughter of Global View has only raced three times and after an eye-catching debut, impressed in her maiden win when beating Sky Cafe comfortably over 1400m on the turf at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

The runner-up franked that form by running out a comfortable winner of her next start. Princess Jo was well supported to follow up but things did not go her way. Racing on the Polytrack for the first time, she had her heels clipped at a vital stage and also came back with an abrasion, so that race is best ignored.

She returns to the turf and will be having her first start at Scottsville. While some runners need a run to adjust to that particular course, Princess Jo gives the impression the track will suit her and she is likely to benefit from the longer run-in.

While there are plenty of hard knockers in the race, she appeals as the banker bet, despite drawing slightly wide at No 9.

Race 1 is a Maiden Juvenile Plate and nine of the 10 runners are unraced. The one that has run does not inspire so it could be worth including Gavin van Zyl-trained Captain Of All colt Navajo Dancer in the BiPot. He will be ridden by De Melo, and Van Zyl’s comment is ‘nice type’.
