Justin, Candice to dominate in Cape

April 2023

Jack Milner

Justin Snaith and Candice Bass-Robinson are sitting first and second on the Western Cape trainers’ log and if the bookmakers have got it right, they should dominate Tuesday’s race meeting at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

Snaith is also currently way out front on the national log with accumulated stakes amounting to R20,086,868 with Bass-Robinson is in third place with earnings of R9,328,025.

Separating the two nationally is Sean Tarry on R9,750,512.

It is not something one sees often but on Tuesday Bass-Robinson has more runners in action than Snaith. She sends out 14 horses while Snaith has 12 and it could be the former who kicks off the meeting with a double and closes it with a double.

In between, Snaith looks certain to pick up a couple of winners and in most cases, runners from his stable look likely to trouble Bass-Robinson’s horses.

Bass-Robinson kicks off the day with Future Variety in Race 1, a Restricted Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m. The Var colt found some support on debut and after a slow start, ran on best of all to finish a 2.50-length second behind Snaith-trained Jewel Cat.

Aldo Domeyer takes the ride this time and with the experience under his belt Future Variety should does look the best of the raced runners.

Distant Winter in Race 2, a Restricted Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies, looks Bass-Robinson’s best runner of the day. The daughter of What A Winter has finished runner-up in all three of her starts, including the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes over 1100m.

She does have a strong finish but Domeyer will have to make sure he can get her to take off a little earlier this time.

Bass-Robinson’s runners in Races 8 and 9 are Flying First and Raising Quinn respectively.

Snaith has booked Fourie to ride William West in Race 3, a Maiden Plate over 1000m, and it could be worth giving another chance to this two-year-old colt who caught the eye under Bernard Fayd'Herbe when a close-up second on debut over the course and distance.

This was a minor feature, the Non-Black Type Commonwealth Plate, and he followed that up with a run in another feature.

Although he blotted his copybook in the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes on Cape Met day he was found to be not striding out behind, so had legitimate excuses for that disappointing showing.

Snaith also had four runners in that event and William West was send off at 25-1.

This son of 2017 Cape Guineas winner William Longsword has been off for 10 weeks since that outing but would have overcome that issue during his time off, so may well bounce back to form and make amends on his reappearance with the booking of Fourie a major boost to his chances.

It is also worth noting he will be running in maiden company for the first time.

Snaith-trained Peut Etre Moi led for much of the way at Hollywoodbets Durbanville last time before being outrun into a 0.30-length second behind Supreme Dream over 2000m four weeks ago.

She meets that rival in Race 7, a Class 4 event for fillies and mares over 1800m, on 2kg better terms, so can be confidently backed to turn the tables on the Brett Crawford-trained runner with the drop back in distance to 1800m likely to suit.

Fourie takes the ride once again.
