JPR One horse to follow for Exeter Gold

November 2025

JPR One is taken to get the better of his younger rival Kalif Du Berlais and win the BetMGM Haldon Gold Cup on Friday at Exeter for a second successive year.

The Tizzard family has a long association with the race, with JPR One's trainer Joe Tizzard winning it twice as a jockey for Paul Nicholls, on Lake Kariba and Flagship Uberalles in the late 1990s.

He then had to wait until 2012 before winning it for his father, Colin, on the brilliant Cue Card, with Tizzard senior winning it again through Eldorado Allen in 2021.

Now an established trainer in his own right, Joe Tizzard has claimed the last two renewals, with Elixir De Nutz preceding JPR One last year.

The selection failed to win again last season, but that said he was still a fine third in the Tingle Creek on ground softer than ideal.

This is basically his Gold Cup, so while plenty of Tizzard's horses are improving for a run, it is unlikely he will have left much to work on here and although Kalif Du Berlais landed a Grade One in the spring, it might not have taken much winning.

Quebecois has always looked a potential chaser and now gets the opportunity in the ICL Conscious Of Our Impact 'Future Stars' Silver Bowl Novices' Chase.

A bumper winner, he scored impressively first time out over hurdles but then was not quite up to graded level.

Put into a handicap at the Scottish Grand National meeting, he bolted up off top-weight and connections will have been counting down the days before he went chasing.

He wore a tongue tie at Ayr and has had a wind operation in the summer. In his favour is that he has won first time out for the past two seasons.

The Rebecca Menzies-trained Raffles Wonder can bring up a hat-trick in the Sidgwick Memorial Handicap Chase at Hexham.

A 10-length winner at Sedgefield in January, he defied a 6lb rise when winning at Ayr in March.

He is another 7lb higher for this assignment but appears to have really got the hang of things and can continue his progression.

Out Of The Woods should relish an extra 800m in the Unibet Money Back Races Every Day Maiden Hurdle.

He won his first bumper at Ayr well but when upped in grade at Kelso just found things happening too quickly over 3200m.

Call Me Legend outran market expectations at Chepstow recently and with that behind him should be hard to beat in the V2 Radio Maiden Hurdle at Fontwell.

Trained by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, he finished fourth of 15 in what looked an above-average race so should be up to winning a contest of this nature.

Hugo Palmer's We're Goosers has been beaten a neck in his two races to date but can make it third time lucky in the Read Meg Nicholls' Blog At betmgm.co.uk EBF Novice Stakes at Newcastle. - Press Association
