JONQUIL TRUSTED TO GET BACK ON TRACK AT SOUTHWELL

October 2024

By Nick Robson, PA

Jonquil is given the opportunity to show his recent run at Doncaster was all wrong when he reappears in the Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 EBF Novice Stakes at Southwell.

Whenever a youngster from the yard of the soon-to-retire Sir Michael Stoute wins on debut, it tends to get people excited given he is renowned for his patient style.

So the fact Jonquil not only won on his first outing, but did so when overcoming plenty of trouble in running at Sandown, created quite a stir.

He was sent to Doncaster for the Listed Flying Scotsman just two weeks later and while he was sent off favourite under Ryan Moore, he was decidedly weak in the market just before the off.

By halfway Moore was sending out distress signals and at no stage did he look like winning, trailing home in sixth behind Benevento.

No explanation could be found for the poor run and it is comforting that he is out again relatively quickly, which suggests there was nothing untoward and it could just be put down to an off day.

He is taken to confirm the huge promise of his debut success.

Amy Murphy’s War Bride was rewarded for a string of consistent efforts when winning at Yarmouth last time out.

The filly had been second on her two previous outings and despite a 3lb rise, comfortably made all the running.

Up another 3lb for the Southwell Golf Course Fillies’ Handicap, the booking of Hollie Doyle catches the eye.

Idle Assembly is bred to be a good deal better than a 62-rated filly but that is the mark she has been awarded after three runs for Brian Meehan.

The daughter of Night Of Thunder cost €110,000 and finished mid-division early last year at Haydock and Newmarket and was then off for over a year before reappearing at Ripon when a beaten favourite.

It was reported she was restless and failed to handle the undulations, so she can be forgiven that effort and is afforded one more chance in the Andy Buxton Handicap at Leicester.

At Brighton, Tony Carroll’s evergreen sprinter Recon Mission suggested he was not far off winning again when second last time out and can go one better in the Download The At The Races App Apprentice Handicap.

The eight-year-old was rated as high as 104 at his peak and is now lurking in the mid-60s.

He has been beaten a nose twice recently so would not be winning out of turn.

Nigel Twiston-Davies has his string in its usual good form at this time of year and his Ballintubber Boy looks the one to be on in the JCB Fastrac Handicap Hurdle at Huntingdon.

A winner at the track in May, he was then well beaten at the Galway Festival but will find this competition much easier. - Press Association
