Jonquil can flower for Stoute at Doncaster

September 2024

Sir Michael Stoute has been in the news this week having announced his imminent retirement and Jonquil can ensure he remains in the headlines by winning the Betfred Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster on Friday.

Owned by Juddmonte, who have seen their colours carried to victory by Frankel in this race (before it became a Listed contest) and Sangarius, who Stoute trained to win the Hampton Court Stakes, Jonquil made an impressive start to his racing life at Sandown.

Not much went right in truth, as when the pace quickened, he had no room whatsoever and was on the back foot, but once in the clear, he soon changed gear.

It looked like it was only going to be enough to claim second but he got the verdict by a short head, looking a hugely-promising colt in the process.

Stoute would probably not have minded had he failed to get up, as that would have allowed him to run in another maiden, but the rest of us like to see the good horses tested and this should be just that.

In the Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Flying Childers Stakes, the return to 1000m seems sure to suit Big Mojo.

Representing the same connections as last year's winner Big Evs, he was a 25-1 winner of the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood and proved that to be no fluke when running a solid race in the Gimcrack at York.

The last 200m caught him out that day, but he was only beaten 2-lengths, so dropping back to the minimum trip and being allowed to roll should see him return to winning ways.

The Betfred Howard Wright Doncaster Cup can go the way of the old-timer Trueshan.

Despite the ground probably being a touch quicker than he would ideally prefer, Alan King's eight-year-old likes it on Town Moor.

He won the Group Two last year despite pulling like a train and drifting close home, and the dew in the mornings this week will prevent the ground from getting quick, plus the extra 400m should suit him more than others.

James Fanshawe's East India Dock looks a step ahead of the handicapper in the Betfred Mallard.

Desperately unlucky at Goodwood in August, he then made no mistake back there for his next run off the same mark but with the assistance of his jockey's 5lb claim.

He has a 6lb penalty this time, but Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle and he remains full of potential over this sort of trip.

Andrew Balding's Kingsclere catches the eye on name and pedigree in the Coopers Marquees EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

While she is not the first to carry the name of the stable, she is a sister of Balding's Guineas winner Kameko.

Thornaby Pearl ran well for a long way last time out at Ripon and can make good use of stall three in the Inkerman London Handicap at Chester.

Glistening has been a beaten favourite in her two runs to date but the form of her last race has been given several significant boosts, so she should get off the mark in the Pravha EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Sandown.

Salisbury stages the rearranged Group Three Ire-Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes, which was lost last week due to a monsoon.

William Haggas' Jewelry went off at 14-1 for her debut but she won with plenty in hand and looks ready for this grade already. - Press Association
