Jewelry can sparkle at Salisbury

September 2024

Jewelry can take the leap to Group Three company in her stride in the Ire-Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes at Salisbury on Thursday.

Hailing from the exceptional Urban Sea line on her dam's side, this daughter of Wootton Bassett was snapped up for 280,000 guineas as a yearling last year and offered an initial - if moderate - return on that investment with a debut win.

Lining up at Newbury last month, she was allowed to go off a 14-1 shot for William Haggas but made a mockery of that price with an eyecatching 2.5-length verdict over a previous winner.

The form has not really been tested yet but you could not quibble with the manner of Jewelry's success and there could be plenty more to come, even though she lacks the big autumn entries of some of her rivals here.

Dance And Romance would be an apt winner of the European Bloodstock News EBF 'Lochsong' Fillies' Handicap.

The race commemorates the super sprinter who was trained by Andrew Balding's father, Ian, with Dance And Romance representing the Kingsclere team.

From the family of Cotai Glory, Dance And Romance won on her racecourse debut in April before a Lingfield second and returned from a two-month break to score in convincing style at Nottingham in mid-July.

She then headed to Goodwood, finishing a narrow third off a 6lb higher mark to the reopposing Kitai, with second-placed Katey Kontent also in this field again.

There is not too much difference in the weights for round two, and given the narrow margins that separated all three fillies last time, another tight battle is in prospect.

Ralph Beckett takes the wraps off a fantastically-bred youngster as Dissident tackles the Byerley Stud Novice Stakes.

A son of Frankel out of Emulous, Dissident is a half-brother to Beckett's star filly Bluestocking, who also made a winning racecourse bow at this track in 2022.

Defence Minister made an immediate impact on debut at Newmarket and can follow up in the Join Racing TV Now EBF Novice Stakes at Haydock.

A breeze-up buy in May for Wathnan Racing, Defence Minister certainly knew his job last month as he overcame a slightly troubled run to win under a hands-and-heels ride over 1200m.

Good value for that 0.75-length verdict over Boxtel, Defence Minister could have bigger targets in his sights before the end of the campaign.

Charlie Appleby had a handful of options for the coming days with Silver Peak, so it is perhaps telling he has opted for the Watch On Racing TV EBF Novice Stakes.

A E1.25million purchase as a yearling, the Godolphin colt started life over 1400m at Kempton where he ran a fair fourth, just lacking an extra gear in the finish.

Moving up to 1600m now, this relation of Persian King can start to shine. - Press Association
