Janidil can justify long journey to Huntingdon

December 2023

Janidil can make the trip from Ireland pay dividends by landing the TrustATrader Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon on Sunday.

Willie Mullins sends the nine-year-old across the Irish Sea following a satisfactory reappearance behind stablemate Allaho at Clonmel last month.

While Janidil was no match for the nine-length winner, he did briefly look like putting up a credible challenge before Allaho engaged an extra gear and fairly flew home.

Given he was conceding 5lb to a dual Ryanair Chase winner, it was a creditable effort from Janidil, who despite being a Grade One winner as a novice, is perhaps just a touch short of the top level in open company.

His mark of 161 puts him slightly ahead of First Flow and, given he has won on soft to heavy ground, the likely deep conditions should prove no bar to success.

Junkanoo was unfortunate to bump into the returning Doddiethegreat on his hurdles bow but there does not appear to be a rival of that calibre in the second division of the TrustATrader trustarader.com Novices' Hurdle.

The six-year-old outran his 40-1 odds to be beaten just two lengths by the well-regarded winner and a contest like this should be well within his range.

Javert Allen can get off the mark over obstacles in the TrustATrader You Can Trust Our Traders Handicap Hurdle.

A Bangor bumper winner last season, he was well beaten in second on his initial hurdles start but when switched to handicap company in October, he took a step forward to go down by just a length to Moveit Like Minnie.

The winner has since triumphed again to give the form a pleasing look.

Gentleman De Mai is the choice in the Bruce Farms Scottish Borders National Handicap Chase at Kelso.

He will be having just his fifth chase start in this contest, having broken his duck when emerging victorious over just short of 4800m last month.

Rose Dobbin hikes him up in trip to an extended 6400m here, but he ran well over a little short of that last term and can be expected to improve for his debut effort.

El Fabiolo is the star attraction as he returns to action for Mullins at Cork.

Unbeaten in four novice chase starts last term, he saw off a slightly below-par Jonbon at Cheltenham before following up in style at the Punchestown Festival and is already a very short price for the Champion Chase in March.

The Bar One Racing Hilly Way Chase has been a happy hunting ground for Mullins' 3200m stars, with Energumene winning the last two renewals, while the likes of Douvan, Chacun Pour Soi and Un De Sceaux also feature on the roll of honour.

Zenta is another high-profile runner for the yard as she kicks off over fences in the O'Flynn Group Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase.

A Grade One winner over hurdles at Aintree in the spring, the four-year-old wastes no time in switching spheres. - Press Association
