Jab can land knockout blow at Chelmsford

July 2025

Jabaara can scoop more Listed honours given optimum conditions on Tuesday at Chelmsford, where she sets a lofty standard in the bet365 Queen Charlotte Fillies' Stakes.

Roger Varian's four-year-old has always been held in high regard and enjoyed a fine summer last term, winning twice at this level, with arguably her best performance coming when second to Donnacha O'Brien's ace filly Porta Fortuna in the Falmouth Stakes.

That performance came over 1600m, but it is easy to see from her CV that the 1400m distance is where she truly thrives and after heading to America in the early part of 2025 she has been right at home at this yardage since returned to home soil.

She was beaten a neck in a red-hot Chartwell Fillies' Stakes at Lingfield, a piece of form which has since been boosted at every turn, while she heads here on the back of a commanding win at Musselburgh last time out and will prove hard to stop if in the same form, despite giving 3lb to all her rivals.

Blindedbythelights was denied by the barest margin at Newmarket in May but can gain compensation now tried up at 3200m in the Download The bet365 App Handicap.

Trainer Sir Mark Prescott is a master of eeking out improvement as his troops progress both through the grades and up in distance and this five-year-old has proven to be a textbook model so far.

He is 2lb higher than his narrow Rowley Mile reversal but that was both a hot event and his first outing in 373 days and there is every chance that run plus this move up in trip can inspire the required extra.

Big Fun can get off the mark at the third time of asking in the Alan Steel For Tax Planning EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes at Musselburgh.

Kevin Ryan's youngster has run two perfectly respectable races to date, doing little wrong but just finding one too good each time.

First time out at Pontefract he was an unconsidered 20-1 chance but the son of Showcasing massively outran those expectations when beating all bar Varian's Farough who had the benefit of experience.

It was the complete opposite next time out at Hamilton when he was a beaten odds-on favourite but the winner, Gesayed, could be well above average.

Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan are still on a high following the Royal Ascot success of American Affair and they are usually worth following at Musselburgh.

They team up with the veteran seven-year-old Yaaser in the Alan Steel For Pensions Handicap and off a mark of 76 he should be in the mix.

At Brighton it could be tough for the opposition to stop the flying Twilight Guest extending his winning run in the Star Sports Handicap.

George Margarson's five-year-old has been in rude health all season and having twice romped home over course and distance, he made it a hat-trick at Pontefract last time out.

He is quickly returned to his favourite playground under a 5lb penalty and there is nothing amongst the opposition to provide any sleepless nights. - Press Association
