Invincible poised for Sussex National double

January 2026

Invincible Nao can land back-to-back renewals of the BetGoodwin Casino Sussex National Handicap Chase at Plumpton on Sunday.

Trained by Gary and Josh Moore, he got the better of Dom Of Mary in last year's race when it was run in February.

He then failed to back that up in the Midlands National won by Mr Vango but he may have been feeling the effects of a hard race as his jockey reported he was never travelling.

Refreshed over the summer, he reappeared at Sandown in November when surprisingly for a horse laden with stamina, he had enough pace to win over 4000m.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with his performance when he returned to Sandown for the London National on his most recent outing either.

He was the only one still on the bridle three fences from home but he got in tight to the second last which cost him valuable momentum and he just plugged on at one pace for fourth behind O'Connell.

The winner went close in the Welsh National so that form is strong and off just 4lb higher than last year, he must have a good chance.

Emma Lavelle's Modern Man can back up a recent course-and-distance success in the Dunraven Windows/EBF 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle at Chepstow.

Third to a decent type on his hurdling debut in November, he looked a classy operator when making all back at the Welsh venue a month later and he is back there again.

He faces a credible rival in Baron Noir but looks the speedier of the two to date.

Rebecca Curtis enjoyed just about the best day of her career at the track when Haiti Couleurs won the Welsh National and should be back in the number one position with The Price Of Peace.

An 11-length winner last time out, he arguably achieved more when second to the useful Kalkbrenner on hurdling debut.

He is giving weight away to all his rivals but sets a decent standard for them to aim at.

Ziggy's Triton is clearly on very good terms with himself and can bring up a quick hat-trick in the Midnite Are Upping The Betting Game Handicap on the all-weather at Southwell.

A wide-margin winner at the track on December 18, he defied a 10lb rise at the same course 10 days later.

He has a 5lb penalty for that success so is over 14lb higher in the weights than for his first win, but is in a rich vein of form for David O'Meara.

As the card is rider restricted, meaning only jockeys who have ridden below 30 winners in a specified time frame can participate, O'Meara has booked Mark Winn, who will be one of the more experienced in the race.

Tony Carroll trained over 100 winners last year and got off the mark for 2026 on New Year's Day suggesting more success is on the cards.

He runs Gogo Yubari in the Make The Move To Midnite Handicap and top weight might not stop him given he won last time out.

Jim Goldie may have turned 70 recently but has shown no signs of slowing down, and there is an argument to say 2025 was his best year yet given it contained Royal Ascot winner American Affair.

He has been a big supporter of Lauren Young and she continues to repay the faith.

She takes over on Krissy in the Midnite, Building The Future Of Betting Handicap and her 5lb claim more than offsets a rise for a recent win. - Press Association
