Improving Impero appeals at Musselburgh

November 2024

Irish raider Impero looks well-placed to complete his hat-trick in the opening Join Racing TV Now Novices' Hurdle at Musselburgh on Thursday.

The five-year-old has really found his form since joining Cian Collins this summer, finishing second on his stable debut at Listowel before notching back-to-back wins at Downpatrick and Cheltenham.

He proved himself better than a handicap mark of 119 when scoring at Prestbury Park a month ago and the form could hardly have worked out better, with both the runner-up Norman Fletcher and the third-placed Aucunrisque winning since.

Stepping back into novice company, Impero undoubtedly sets the standard and should prove hard to beat on his favoured good ground.

One Step Up has sound claims in the Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Novices' Handicap Chase.

Another stable switcher, having left Nicky Richards to join Stuart Coltherd, the six-year-old suggested there were races to be won with him when second at Perth during the summer, but was disappointingly pulled up at the same track next time.

However, he got back on track at Ayr last month, running a bold race from the front in first-time cheek pieces before weakening late on into third place.

One Step Up has his attentions switched to the larger obstacles for the first time in Scotland and if his jumping stands up to the test, he could take some pegging back on a speed favouring track.

Rebecca Menzies has her string in excellent form at the moment and she will be hoping Twoplacesatonetime can supplement a recent Hexham success in the Musselburgh Racecourse Premium Annual Membership Handicap Hurdle.

The application of cheek pieces also did the trick for this gelding judged on his narrow success last time out and a 5-point rise does not look insurmountable for a horse who is still lightly raced after just six lifetime starts.

Dual bumper winner Jasmine Bliss switches to the jumping game in the Watch Unbridled On attheraces.com Mares' Maiden Hurdle at Lingfield.

The daughter of Blue Bresil does have jumping experience having graduated from the Irish point-to-point sphere and looked a smart prospect after joining Harry Derham last term.

Fourth on her rules debut at Ludlow 12 months ago, the five-year-old went on to open her account at Wetherby in the new year and followed up under a penalty in heavy ground at Newbury.

Now the rain has arrived, Jasmine Bliss is ready to make her seasonal and hurdling debut and looks an exciting prospect.

Super Sabre Sam is rated a good bet at Taunton in the Trucksmith Tipper Handicap Hurdle.

In truth, the five-year-old showed very little in three outings last term, but he appeared much improved on his return at Fontwell last month, scoring comfortably.

The form of that race is not particularly strong, but Super Sabre Sam could do no more than win as he liked and an opening mark of 113 looks fair enough ahead of what does not look a strong race.

Montregard is the pick in the Stables Business Park Novices' Handicap Chase.

A decent hurdler last spring, winning at Wetherby before finishing third as favourite at the Punchestown Festival, Tom Lacey's charge was a shade disappointing on his chasing debut, but set the record straight with an emphatic victory at Market Rasen a fortnight ago.

He looked to improve for the step up to this 4800m trip that day and can double up. - Press Association
