Jack Milner: Piere Strydom rode two winners at the Vaal on Tuesday and can continue the run at the same course on Thursday.
His best ride looks to be Spanish Boy in Race 8, a MR 88 Handicap over 1200m.
Strydom has done well aboard the Lucky Houdalakis-trained runner, having ridden him four times for a win, a second and two third places. His last three runs have been on the Inside track at Turffontein which have been around the turn, and he could well enjoy the return to racing up the straight.
Spanish Boy finished a neck behind Al Quaqaa last time and was penalised 2kg for that run, which means the horses who ran behind him that day, Silver Master and Written In Stone, should be able to get closer this time.
However, they were 2.75 and 3.25 lengths respectively behind Spanish Boy which means they are unlikely to turn that result around.
There look to be two other good bets on the card.
Gavin Lerena, also hot after a double yesterday, looks hard to oppose in Race 3 where he rides Push Off for Mike de Kock. The Irish-bred gelding ran a cracker on debut when she came from last to run a 1.75-length third behind Master Uletide over 1200m on the Inside track at Turffontein and should have come on from the experience.
Then, in Race 9, Paul Peter-trained Wine Tasting should follow up on her second behind Malmoos. She was thoroughly beaten 6.25 lengths by De Kock’s charge over 1450m, but she made the pace for the 1200m and will benefit from the return to fillies’ company and the drop in distance in this FM 72 Handicap over 1200m.
