Jack Milner: Jockey Lyle Hewitson and trainer Garth Puller have formed quite a formidable team of late.
Their consistency has been remarkable as the former two-time champion jockey has ridden 26 times for the Puller yard. Has won seven of them and placed on a further 13 occasions. To put that into percentages, that works out as a 27% win rate and a 77% place rate.
How is that for a worthwhile statistic when deciding what to put in your Place Accumulator?
Also, while he forfeited his chances of winning a third successive championship by going overseas last season, Hewitson has started to open his lead over the opposition quite early this season.
Obviously, there is still a long way to go and a lot can still happen, but Hewitson currently has recorded 39 winners and is six clear of Greg Cheyne and seven ahead of S’manga Khumalo. Luke Ferraris is in fourth place on 23 winners.
On Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville, Puller and Hewitson team up with Winter Chill in Race 6, a MR 88 Handicap over 1200m on the turf. Hewitson knows the gelding, he rode the four-year son of What A Winter to victory last time at Scottsville, the second of his two wins at the course.
This time they will be running around the turn and Winter Chill has a second and an unplaced run at this course. He has, however, won on the Polytrack so that is a positive.
There is some light at the end of the tunnel because although it does not reflect in his official form line, the gelding did win a barrier trial over 1000m on the Greyville turf.
He is drawn well enough in ate No 4 and looks the runner to beat.
The main threat is likely to come from Dennis Drier-trained Dieci. This five-year-old mare is in top form having won her last two races confidently.
She is nicely drawn at No 2 and has regular rider Sean Veale in the irons but the one concern is that this is her first race against the colts, and she will have to give 1kg to Winter Chill.
Kayson could have a bright future and he showed a lot of guts last time when giving odds-on favourite Captain Oupie a torrid time, and just went down a short head.
He’s going to carry just 51kg thanks to an apprentice allowance and a decent run is expected of Brett Crawford’s charge.
