HAMISH CAN CELEBRATE ANOTHER CROWNING MOMENT AT NEWMARKET

July 2024

By Anita Chambers

Hamish can add a Group Two victory to his laudable CV in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket.

William Haggas’ charge is one of the most consistent horses in training, holding his rating of 117 since the end of 2022 and notching up no less than eight Group Three victories.

The eight-year-old really thrives when the mud is flying but as long as there is some soft in the going, he can usually put his best foot forward as he showed when posting a career-best effort last time out.

Beaten a length by Irish Champion Stakes victor Luxembourg in the Coronation Cup, Hamish finished with a real flourish which is no surprise given he has won up to a mile and six furlongs during his career.

Dropping back to Group Two level here on a more conventional track, Hamish can go well again as long as there is ease in the ground.

Ancient Wisdom is another who would appreciate cut as he returns to action in the Bahrain Trophy Stakes.

Winner of the Futurity Trophy on bottomless going at Doncaster, Ancient Wisdom returned to action in the Dante at York where he proved no match for impressive winner Economics and certainly did not look fully effective on quicker going.

While the Derby ground was good to soft, the Epsom track never appeared to suit Ancient Wisdom as he came home eighth but again this track should be more to his liking.

Switching up to a mile and five furlongs here, Ancient Wisdom can put his name into the early St Leger mix.

Electrolyte only narrowly failed to prevail in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot but compensation awaits in the Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes.

A winner at Ayr first time up, he led home the stands’ side group in Berkshire, but Rashabar still had his measure by a nose on the other side of the track.

If Electrolyte can repeat that effort, it should be good enough.

Away from Newmarket, Air Force Indi takes the eye on her return in the PPM Novice Stakes.

A Newmarket maiden last August, Air Force Indi has been off the track since subsequently finishing fifth in a Salisbury Group Three, beaten less than three lengths.

Returning over six furlongs at Doncaster, she is worth watching.

Wathbah is the choice in Carlisle’s Racing TV Maiden Fillies’ Stakes after two fair efforts so far, while Vanish can prevail in the Pump Technology Novice Stakes at Newbury.

Entered in the Great Voltigeur next month, Vanish finished second on his only start for Harry Charlton at this track in April and now lines up for Owen Burrows.

Allonsy can defy a 4lb rise for her recent win in the Betfred Nifty 50 Handicap at Epsom.
