Both Leg 1 winners of the SA Triple Crown and Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara - have been entered for the respective Leg 2 at Turffontein on Saturday 2 March.
Sandringham Summit easily captured the Grade 2 TAB Gauteng Guineas while Gimme A Nother proved far too good for her opposition in the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas – both over 1600m – and it comes as no surprise to see both priced up in the red for Leg 2, the TAB SA Classic and Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic, both Grade 1 races over 1800m.
Interestingly, Sandringham Summit has also been entered to run in the other Grade 1 race on the day, the HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m, but bookmakers must know something because the David Nieuwenhuizen-trained colt has been priced up at 22-1 for that race.
He has landed No 1 draw for the Horse Chestnut Stakes and No 11 of 12 runners for the SA Classic but it does make more sense for Sandringham Summit to remain in races against his own age group at the moment.
Sandringham Summit’s opposition comprises many of the runners he beat in the Guineas with both second-placed Hotarubi and third-placed William Iron Arm among the nominations.
Mike de Kock has also gone for a Grade 1 dual entry as Silver Sanctuary, runner-up to stablemate Gimme A Nother in both the SA Classic, where she will receive a 2.5kg sex allowance, and the SA Fillies Classic.
Candice Bass-Robinson won the Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m last year with Trip Of Fortune and she has nominated Sugar Mountain to run in this year’s event. Dean Kannemeyer also has an entry in Cosmic Highway who has been running against the likes of Charles Dickens in Cape Town.
However, Horse-Of-The-Year Princess Calla heads up the entries for that race.
Supplementary entries close at 09:00 on Friday with declarations by 11:00 on Tuesday
