Guard the wall at Fairview

September 2024

Jack Milner

The expected scratching of Ponte Vecchio, who raced at last Friday’s meeting, from Race 1 at Fairview Monday may have paved the way for Best Intentions to get bettors off to a winning start.

Racing is on the Polytrack and the Gavin Smith-trained and Muzi Yeni-ridden filly has a golden opportunity to score in this Conditional Maiden for fillies and mares over 1200m.

The Rafeef filly has lost her way of late, but she has been placed a number of times over this course and distance and bumps a very weak field.

Race 2 is a Classified Stakes over 1200m and Guarding The Wall appears to have landed in the perfect race and as a result Sharon Kotzen’s charge looks to be the best bet and quite a tricky card.

The four-year-old gelding looked an unlucky loser on local debut and ran another cracking race when third last time out.

It will be his first taste of the Polytrack but from the pole position he should have an easy task of scoring. Louie Mxothwa rode him in his debut run when beaten just 0.10 lengths by Jackson Mississippi and he will be back in the irons for this race.

Course experience and a good draw could also help Kelly Mitchley-trained Bryden Bay to win Race 4, a Maiden Plate over 1400m.

The four-year-old Visionaire gelding has struggled on the turf but has put in some improved runs of late on the Polytrack. He was only three lengths back on local debut behind James Fitzjames.

He led that day and was only run out of late by some better opposition.

A tricky draw last time and a change of tactics saw a third-place finish behind King's Sailor. That was not a bad performance and this time he will have the services of Sean Veale.
