Grovefield to end day well for Yogas

Yogas Govender did not have the best of Champions’ Seasons this year, but nevertheless has been quietly sending out winners from time to time.

It is the start of the new season and Govender sends out one of his best in Grovefield, a well-bred Canford Cliffs colt who and looks the one to follow in Race 8, a MR 80 Handicap over 1000m on the turf track at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

There was plenty to like about the way Grovefield won his maiden at the second time of asking when an inexperienced two-year-old back in February. And he must have been showing plenty back home as he was heavily backed to win.

Govender wasn’t shy to have a go in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes thereafter but when the valuable colt pulled up short having finished downfield, he then avoided the tough KZN winter season, allowing him time to mature and grow.

He is meeting tough and speedy handicappers, but top rider Calvin Habib has been booked to ride and he also appears better than his merit rating of 88.
