Greeff to stave off Western Cape raiders

August 2023

Jack Milner

New sponsor Betway sets foot in Port Elizabeth on Friday as part of their new deal with 4Racing and the Listed Betway Insurebet Jockey Club Stakes (Listed) over 2000m on the turf track at Fairview has been the beneficiary of that contract as the stake money has been increased to R200,000.

Also in town are three raiding trainers from the Western Cape – Justin Snaith, Brett Crawford and Glen Kotzen – who will be looking to usurp the lion’s share of that upped stake.

But flying the flag for the local team are Alan Greeff, Sharon Kotzen and Jurgen van Heerden, and it is the home team who could well have the final say.

Greeff holds a strong hand with Santa Therese who not only has excellent form over the course and distance but also is the best weighted runner in this field of fillies and mares.

Although now six years old with her racing career now heading towards the finishing post, this daughter of Flower Alley has lost none of her zest for racing. She has a record of eight wins and seven places from 15 starts at this course and remarkably in her only unplaced run, which was over 2400m, she finished just 0.70 lengths behind the winner.

Richard Fourie has ridden her seven times for three wins and three seconds, and he gets the ride once again.

Crawford is not a regular visitor to Fairview but having started his training career in the Eastern Cape has a good eye for which horses will perform in the province. He must believe Future Girl has what it takes to win a race like this and has Louie Mxothwa in the irons.

Medlers Tart arrived in Port Elizabeth a maiden and has since notched up three wins for Sharon Kotzen and might still have a lot more to give.
