Jack Milner: It might be a new season but, just as simple as the turning of a page, life goes on as usual.
Racing takes place at Fairview on Monday when they race on the Polytrack.
The meeting is dominated by the two leading trainers – Alan Greeff and Gavin Smith – who saddle 16 and 19 horses respectively at the track.
Greeff confirmed another win in the local trainers’ championship, stamping his authority with five winners in last Friday’s final meeting of the season.
While Greeff might have three runners less than Smith, he appears to the better quality.
With five runners in each race, the local champion should dominate Races 7 and 8.
Race 7 is a MR 98 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1000m and Greeff saddles Gin Fizz, Delicasea, Bad Habit, Ambra and Mendochino.
The first two look the best of the Quintet. Gin Fizz was impressive over this course and distance on her local debut. She did not really repeat that form on the turf in a couple of runs but they were not bad runs. Returning to the Polytrack, she could recoup any losses Delicasea, to be ridden by Greg Cheyne, is in good form and must be given some consideration.
Race 8 is a MR 90 Handicap over 1200m and Greeff sends out Regimental, Oscar Wilde, Dubula, Kingston Rock and Tarsus and once again it is the first too who warrant respect. Both have made major improvement for this trainer and could fight out the finish.
However, Regimental has been particularly impressive in his six runs at Fairview which have produced four wins and two places.
Most importantly, he has won both his starts on the Polytrack. Cheyne rides.
