Trainer Sean Tarry and jockey Craig Zackey team up with two juveniles on the nine-race card at on the Standside track Turffontein on Monday and both of them will be strongly fancied to win.
Few would doubt that Golden Operator, who lines up in Race 4, a maiden Juvenile Plate over 1400m, stands out as the best bet on the card.
Zackey was aboard Declarationofpeace colt Golden Operator on debut when the youngster's inexperience at Hollywoodbets Greyville cost himself victory. He was well supported in the betting to go off at 11-10 and it was his inexperience that undoubtedly cost him the victory. The win went to another debutant, Michael Miller-trained Soldier Boy, who won by 0.25 lengths.
Golden Operator and Zackey departed company shortly after the finish line but could repay his rider for sticking with him when he makes his Highveld debut in Race 4 over 1400m.
On the evidence of his encouraging 1200m debut, and with the benefit of that outing under the belt, Golden Operator, who does meet the strongest of fields his time, looks hard to oppose this time.
The extra 200m should also assist him and having raced at Greyville last time, he has experienced racing around the turn. It is also worth noting that Ziyaan’s Pride, who finished eighth behind Soldier Boy, has gone on to win his next race.
Zackey also rides Trajanus, a two-year-old grey son of Danon Platina, in Race 2, a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1000m. He was well fancied on debut at Hollywoodbets Scottsville with Callan Murray up and ran accordingly to finish a 0.40-length-second behind Little Boy Blue over 1000m.
He is drawn No 5 up the straight which should put him in the middle of the field up
the straight which seems to be a decent enough draw these days.
Another interesting Tarry runner come up in Race 7, a MR 80 Handicap over 2000m, where he sends out War Reporter with S’manga Khumalo up.
The three-year-old Vercingetorix gelding tries 2000m for the first time but he looks as if this could be what he is looking for. His last two races were decent enough to make him competitive in what is a very open event.
