Goddess to score at Greyville

Trainer Dean Kannemeyer had a tough day by his standards on Durban July day but his spirits may lift after Avernian Goddess returns to the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday. The promising filly has strong form and stands out as the best bet on the day.

Avernian Goddess looked a touch unlucky not to open her account at the first time of asking. She appeared a seasoned veteran and settled well on the poly just off the pace but just when she ranged up to the leaders, looking a massive contender, she was hampered and thereafter got going too late to catch winner Pilot Flame. She was beaten only 0.40 lengths.

The bay filly has been a bit costly on the turf, running second in her last two, but as a juvenile she appears to do a bit too much on the turf and as she was beaten in two close finishes, those were solid efforts beaten. Back on the poly the daughter of Vercingetorix could hold too many guns for the opposition she meets in Race 1, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1200m.

For more value it could be worth following Sweet Julia (Race 4) and Mister Nibbles (Race 7). Sweet Julia took a few runs to shed her maiden tag but won in a fast time and has drawn in gate No 1 on her handicap debut. It is a tough race but as a result she could pay well for the win and place.

It is a worry that Mister Nibbles faded over 1400m two runs back, but he raced too freely then. He impressed over 1200m and if getting a good pace over 1400m he could follow up.
