Go West to extend winning run at Kempton

April 2025

Paul Nicholls' Go West can continue his progression in the Join Racing TV Now "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle at Kempton on Tuesday.

The seven-year-old took up the discipline this season after a lengthy pause between his hurdling debut and the bumper career that saw him win once and place second twice in four starts.

When taking up hurdling, he has also been faced with longer trips since his sole point to point start, and though fifth when keen on his debut, he has since impressed with two successive victories.

Go West won a six-runner novice by 12 lengths at Fakenham in December and then made all of the running again at Taunton in February to win by 5.5-lengths.

He carries a double penalty for those two victories but the casual manner in which they were gained suggests there is plenty more to come from the gelding, and he was conceding weight all round to a lesser extent on each of those occasions.

At Fakenham, Summerleaze made a pleasing first start for Olly Murphy a few weeks ago and can follow up in the Racing TV Mares' Novices' Limited Handicap Hurdle.

The eight-year-old had shown glimpses of potential for her previous trainers both in the point-to-point sphere and under rules, without quite managing to hit the target.

She has clearly benefited from a switch to Warren Chase Stables, though, travelling strongly throughout for Sean Bowen at Stratford before coming through to lead on the run-in and land the spoils in fine fashion.

On the Flat it is Andrew Balding's Nobleman who catches the eye in the £30 In Free Bets With BetUK Restricted Maiden Stakes at Wolverhampton.

The three-year-old has three runs under his belt so far and has come forward each time, most recently missing out by a nose when slow off the mark in a Kempton maiden in early March.

It was an encouraging debut over 2400m and he returns to the same trip under Oisin Murphy.

John Butler has a knack of being able to get his horses to tattle up a sequence of wins and Avarice might be the next one.

The eight-year-old had dropped to a basement mark of just 49 before winning at Lingfield last time out.

He carries just a 4lb penalty in the Free Bets With BetUK Bet Club Apprentice Handicap, so is worth sticking with.

Simon and Ed Crisford's War Hawk can break his duck in the Download The Raceday Ready App Handicap at Lingfield.

He has shown a decent level of ability in four starts to date, finishing third on his Newcastle debut and second at Southwell on his penultimate start.

Beaten 2 lengths into fourth last time out, he looked to be crying out for this step up in trip. - Press Association
