Go gung-ho with McCain at Carlisle

February 2025

Donald McCain's Galunggung can rediscover the winning touch in the racingtv.com Novices' Limited Handicap Chase at Carlisle on Monday.

The nine-year-old has presumably had his problems given he did not make his competitive debut until he was seven, but he began to make up for lost time when winning two hurdle races and a novice handicap chase last spring.

He was disappointing on his reappearance at Haydock in November but has since finished third at Market Rasen, where he looked the likely winner until sprawling on landing at the second-last, and was last seen pushing the improving Hombre De Guerra close at Ayr.

Galunggung looked to be getting his act together in the jumping department in Scotland and he should prove hard to beat with a clear round.

Kalium is a little unlucky not to be unbeaten for Tim Vaughan.

He slipped up on the home turn on his debut for the yard and was only caught close home.

Since then he has made most of the running twice, at Wetherby and Fontwell looking useful without suggesting he will be a star.

Despite top weight, if he is allowed to dominate once more in the Watch Racing TV Handicap Hurdle, he could be hard to peg back.

Patrick Mullins is continuing his tour around Britain with a trip to Carlisle to ride More Coko in the Racing TV Novices' Hurdle.

The five-year-old won a Tramore bumper in the colours of Jackie Mullins, Willie's wife and Patrick's mum, before he won for new connections in his hurdling debut at the same track.

He is giving 7lb away all round, but that should not prevent him from remaining unbeaten.

Shared has proved expensive to follow so far this season but can reward those who keep the faith in the Golf And Gallop Package Handicap Hurdle at Southwell.

Rated in the mid-120s this time last year, Harry Derham's charge has dropped to what looks a very workable mark of 116 ahead of his latest assignment.

He was a laboured third when favourite to make a winning return from a break at Kelso in October and just found everything happening a little too quickly for him over 3200m at Plumpton last time out, this time finishing fourth as a 7-4 favourite.

Stepping back up in trip having dropped in the weights, Shared merits another shot.

Karl Burke has introduced some very smart looking newcomers on the all-weather this winter and Paratrooper could be another in the  Win £1M With BetMGM's Golden Goals Novice Stakes at Wolverhampton.

A homebred, owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, the Frankel colt is a half-brother to Cloak Of Spirits, who finished second to Love in the 1000 Guineas for Richard Hannon.

Also in the pedigree is Subastar, who is on the same page as Dubawi, so Paratrooper is certainly bred for the job.

He is up against a few other interesting newcomers but Burke has his string firing. - Press Association
