Friday the 13th no worry for Mxothwa

January 2023

Jack Milner

Because of the vagaries of the racing calendar, there is more superstition around race meetings at Fairview than any other racecourse.

That is because Friday’s belong essentially to racing in Port Elizabeth and every now and so often a meeting takes place on the 13th.

It did not take long for the first of these to come around in 2023 and today could pose a problem from those who suffer from what is termed friggatriskaidekaphobia, the fear of Friday the 13th.

While there are some scary races perhaps there is hope in Race 6, the feature of the day which is the Listed Lady's Bracelet over 1600m.

Santa Therese represents the bang-in-form Richard Fourie-Alan Greeff combination. The five-year-old mare has won 11 of her 20 starts to date and looked as good as ever in her last start win.

The conditions of the race suggest she is well in with her rivals but she has been beaten twice over this course and distance this season.

And We Danced was one of those who beat her and this filly has been a revelation of late and comes into this race looking to extend her run of successive wins to five.

And We Danced arrived at Sharon Kotzen with just one win in 13 starts and is now six from 20.

With Belle Of Belize scratched the two key rivals to square off against one another again. Although Santa Therese is 4kg better off for that three-length beating the last time they met, one does get the impression she needs a little further these days while And We Danced has improved since then.

So, although it is likely to be a lot closer, over this distance it is the Pathfork filly who once again gets the nod with high-riding Luyolo Mxothwa back in the irons.
