Free Wind Can Blow Goodwood Rivals Into Touch

August 2023

By Anita Chambers, PA

Free Wind can highlight a double for the Gosden team on the final day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

The five-year-old is on something of a retrieval mission after a short-priced disappointment in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, where she was beaten three lengths into fifth by Pyledriver on ground that was probably just too quick for her liking.

Her previous run has a much more pleasing look about it, having won the Middleton Stakes at York, beating subsequent Ascot winner Rogue Millennium in what was her first outing in over 300 days.

That victory was over an extended 10 furlongs, but this 14-furlong distance should provide few concerns as Free Wind hacked up in the 2021 Park Hill Stakes over the trip and her proven capability on ground with cut is another huge plus.

She has to concede 3lb all round, but Free Wind is still well ahead on the ratings at that.

Sweet William should have initiated the Clarehaven brace earlier in the afternoon for John and Thady Gosden.

The four-year-old arrives fresh from victory at Newbury last month, when he looked very impressive in winning by a cosy three lengths off a mark of 88.

He also won his previous start and finished second in each of his three other runs, so he is certainly a consistent type and looks capable of defying a 7lb rise for his Berkshire win.

A half-brother to St Leger winner Hurricane Lane, dropping back a couple of furlongs from two miles is not an issue either.

Significantly could be a value call in the Coral Stewards' Cup, with the six-furlong heat always a difficult puzzle to solve.

Previously trained by Karl Burke, for whom he triumphed three times, Significantly is now in the care of Julie Camacho and has made a promising start since changing hands for 50,000 guineas at the end of last term.

A winner at the second time of asking at Haydock last month, Significantly is making a swift return to action after just losing out in another competitive heat at Ascot last weekend.

Beaten two and a half lengths over five furlongs there, the Garswood gelding should be better suited by this six-furlong test and merits each-way interest if nothing else.

Many A Star can repeat his success of last year in the Coral Stewards' Sprint Handicap.

Trained by Paul and Oliver Cole, he won off a mark of 85 last year and is actually 2lb lower this time after a couple of lacklustre efforts.

He seems to enjoy a trip to Goodwood, winning or placing in each of three starts, and he could be ready to kick his season into gear now.

Away from Goodwood, Amusement is the pick in the Listed British EBF 40th Anniversary Chalice Stakes at Newmarket.

Donnacha O'Brien makes the journey from Ireland with this Galileo filly after she finished third in the Curragh Cup on her most recent spin.

Dropping back to a mile and a half may not be ideal, but she appears the class act.
