The red-hot team of trainer Alan Greeff and Richard Fourie were expected to have a fistful of winners at Fairview last Tuesday but that is not what transpired.
The scene was set when they won Race 2 with Little Lexi but while Greeff went on to claim two further race wins, they were both under other jockeys.
The day, in the end, belonged to Gavin Smith and jockey Craig Zackey who teamed up with three winners.
But at Fairview on Friday Greeff and Fourie look to have a number of competitive runners but the best looks to be Ignitethelight in Race 7, a MR 72 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1400m, with one proviso, she brings her Polytrack form to the turf.
After two poor races on the Highveld, the daughter of Gimmethegreenlight moved to Greeff’s Eastern Cape yard where she has only been beaten once in three starts, and that lone defeat came last time out when she ran a cracker behind top-class Splicethemainbrace.
The three-year-old filly beat Cape Flower on local debut and followed that up with a game win over State Capitol
It is, however, her last run when runner-up behind stable star Splicethemainbrace that suggests Ignitethelite is a lot better than her actual merit rating.
Splicethemainbrace gave Ignitethelite 6.50kg and only beat her by 1.50 lengths. Ignitethelite finished full of running, which suggests her current merit rating of 86 may be too low.
It is also worth noting Ignitethelite has won both times Fourie rode her. She will, however, need to transfer that form from the Polytrack to the turf.
Cliff Top should go close to winning Race 2, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m. The gelding has not won for some time and has been a tad unreliable but a return to the minimum distance could do the trick.
