Fire to flare up in KZN

December 2023

Jack Milner

Trainer Dean Kannemeyer has built up a very good record on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville and he can strike again in Race 4 at the course on Monday when he sends out Fireflare in this Maiden Handicap over 1700m.

This three-year old son of Futura has only raced four times, finishing unplaced on debut, but since then has run in the first three in all of his following starts.

Two runs back he did run on the Polytrack over 1600m where he managed to finish a four-length third behind Future Of Energy. He followed that up with a 0.40 length second behind Hiawatha Goldberg.

That was quite an impressive performance as he shifted out from the whip and can be considered a very unlucky loser. That race was over 1750m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville and last time he returned to the same course to race over 1600m and finished third, where he was beaten just 0.80 lengths.

Once again, he can be considered a slightly unfortunate in that he lost ground at the start and, for the second successive run, was closing in quickly at the end to produce the fastest time for the final 400m.

Fireflare comes into this race as the highest rated runner and will carry 60kg which means he will have to give weight to all the other runners in the race. However, he looks to be at a different level to the balance of his opposition.

But he is nicely drawn in barrier No 5 and will have Craig Zackey in the saddle once again.

The only concern is his tendency to lose ground at the start and hopefully that will not happen on this occasion as he should have learned from his previous experiences.

He should be a banker in all bets.

The balance of the card is testing so it is probably wise to include a number of runners in the other legs of the exotics.
