Fatal Flaw set for Fillies Guineas victory

December 2024

When people try to make excuses after the event, they tend to use the expression that “hindsight is 20/20 vision”.

But there are times when that 20/20 vision can help you in the future and that looks to be the case when Fatal Flaw lines up the Grade 1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.

Piere Strydom enjoyed an armchair ride when winning the Grade 3 Starling Stakes aboard Fatal Flaw over 1400m on Turffontein's Standside track last month.

As a two-year-old, the Brett and James Crawford-trained filly first found World Of Alice too good and was then twice runner-up – in the Grade 3 Golden Horseshoe and then the Grade 1 Thekwini Stakes – behind star filly Quid Pro Quo.

When she won that feature at Turffontein last month, Fatal Flaw reversed the form with World Of Alice and then Sean Tarry’s runner franked that form by winning the Grade 3 Fillies' Mile in Joburg on Betway Summer Cup day.

Add to that Quid Pro Quo’s stunning win against the colts in the Grade 2 Betway Dingaans following a four-month break, it makes Fatal Flaw’s two runner-up spots looks even more spectacular.

Strydom rode Quid Pro Quo to victory so he knows just how good she is and despite a wide No 13 draw he must be feeling positive about his chance in the Cape Guineas.

She has got excellent gate speed which should help her overcome the draw.

The formidable father-and-son partnership has a second string to its bow in Grade 2 Western Cape Fillies Championship winner Mon Petit Cherie, who Richard Fourie rides from gate No 1.

Runner-up Beware The Bomb, third-place finisher Symphony In White, and fast-finishing fifth-placed filly Gimmie's Countess renew rivalry with their last-start conqueror on identical weight terms, so they aren't weighted to reverse the form.

However, the extra 200m is an unknown quantity for them all and that should favour Fatal Flaw, given her top-level experience over the distance.
