Editeur to take Haldon Gold

November 2023

Gary Moore's Editeur Du Gite can defy top weight to land the Betway Haldon Gold Cup Handicap Chase on Friday at Exeter.

The chestnut claimed some notable scalps last term when beating Edwardstone and Energumene in the Clarence House Chase at Cheltenham in January, a win that followed success in the Grade Two Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton.

The Haldon Gold Cup is a return to limited handicap company for the nine-year-old and he certainly carries the evidence of last season's victories with a top weight, but in this field of six, none of whom have reached the same heights, he still holds a lot of appeal.

On the same card there is an interesting contest in the Betway 'Future Stars' Silver Bowl Novices' Chase, a chasing debut for a handful of promising types who previously made an impression over hurdles.

Among them is Stay Away Fay, winner of the Albert Bartlett on his penultimate start last season and a horse for whom a chasing career was immediately mentioned.

The gelding makes his debut in this field of five and although the opposition is fair, with Dan Skelton's Grey Dawning an obvious rival, if he takes to the task he ought to be the one to beat.

On the Flat in the UK there is a good campaigner in action in Mick Appleby's Bedford Flyer, who contests the Always Gamble Responsibly With BetUK Handicap at Newcastle.

The bay enjoyed a return to the all-weather when winning at Lingfield last time out and is a 1000m specialist whose six career wins include success at Newcastle previously.

There is jumping action in Ireland at Down Royal, where Gordon Elliott's Better Days Ahead can shine in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden Hurdle.

The five-year-old is a point to point winner who won and was the runner-up in two bumpers before finishing down the field in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham when last seen.

This is his first attempt at hurdling but his experience on the pointing field should stand him in good stead and his earlier bumper form points to some ability.

The same trainer has a similarly-named horse in Brighterdaysahead in the Grade Three Irish Stallion Farms EBF Feathard Lady Mares Novice Hurdle, a Gigginstown-owned four-year-old.

Unbeaten in two bumpers and a maiden hurdle, no rival has finished within four lengths of her and this step up in grade demonstrates the regard in which she is held.

At Dundalk on the Flat there is an interesting entrant in Ger Lyons' Quadruple, set to run in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden.

The two-year-old Frankel filly makes her debut in the race and is notably well-bred as her dam is Soffia, a seven-time winner who was successful at Listed, Group Three and Group Two level. - Press Association
