Eagle to soar for Marshall

Vaughan Marshall has been around for a long time and along with the likes of Ormond Ferraris, has always trained a high standard.

Not only has he done well with the horses he has trained but has sometimes done even better with their progeny, with One World and William Longsword proving that point.

He had some outstanding horseflesh in his yard last season with L’Omarins King’s Plate winner One Stripe leading the way. He has now gone overseas to continue his career but one has to believe Marshall has one or two waiting in the wings to replace him.

The veteran trainer finished fourth on the national log last season and what was spectacular is that while he only had 51 winners, they returned R10,364,218 and average of R203,219. Champion trainer Justin Snaith was next best but the average return on his 170 winners was R121,427.

That tells us Marshall knows how to win the big ones.

He has 12 runners carded to race at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Wednesday and it would come as a surprise if he does not get punters off to a winning start when he sends out Black Eagle in Race 1, a Maiden Plate over 1200m.

The three-year-old Rafeef colt has raced just three times, and after finishing unplaced on debut, went on to run third and then second last time. However, it was a case of everything that could go wrong did go wrong in that last race over the same course and distance and after leading for most of the journey he rolled out late, making contact with Blind Date who went on by to win the race by 0.20 lengths.

Hopefully Black Eagle will benefit from that experience this time and can go on to notch up his first win.
