Drier on fire at Greyville

Fire Tonic has only raced four times, all of them at Hollywoodbets Greyville, twice on turf and twice on the Polytrack.

While his best performance was over 1400m on the turf, when he came from off the pace to finish second, beaten 0.20 lengths by Captain Spirit, he did have some quality individuals, namely Red Piano and Meetathewindsor, behind him.

His next start was over 1400m on the Polytrack and after leading early on, was caught late to finish second again, 0.90 lengths behind Sir Theodore.

He tried the same tactics again the next time, this time back over 1400m on the turf in yielding going but faded late to finish unplaced. Whether it was the distance, the going or some other extraneous reason that cause the poor run is uncertain, but it is worth noting that the tongue tie, which was fitted for that last run, has been removed when he runs in Race 1, a Maiden Plate over 1200m on the Polytrack on Wednesday.

From barrier No 2 he could sit just off the pace and come at them. Interestingly, Cotton Ron, who looks his chief threat, was easily beaten by Fire Tonic’s stablemate, Captain Rocket, and trainer Dennis Drier will certainly have a line of form to work with.

Two horses should fight out Race 2, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1400m – Sky Café and Stealth Attack. The former lifted her game in her first run back after a six-month layoff and followed up with an eye-catching second behind promising Princess Jo, where she finished eight lengths clear of the third-placed runner.

Stealth Attack comes off a promising form line which has produced two winners and will have Keagan de Melo in the irons.
