The father-and-son training team of Mike and Mathew de Kock came away with a double on Friday at Hollywoodbets Greyville and again at Turffontein on Saturday, and the good run looks set to continue at the Durban racecourse on Tuesday when they race on the Polytrack.
While Mathew has been driving the team on the Highveld, Mike is based in KwaZulu-Natal and can kick off the meeting with Bombardier Boy who stands out as the best bet on the card.
The three-year-old gelding lines up in Race 1, an Open Maiden over 1000m, and will be having his second outing. The son of Heavenly Blue made his debut at HWB Scottsville 14 September over the same distance and although opening up as an 8-10 favourite, drifted to eventually go off at 5-2.
The stable commented that their runner had a winning chance and after leading for much of the journey he was caught late and ended up 1.20 lengths behind Tony Rivalland-trained Cowboy Country.
The winner was also a first-timer and was not winning out of turn as he was the runner supported in the betting and went off as the 14-10 favourite. Cowboy Country won with authority and looks a runner to follow. He is by The United States and is a half-brother to Pistol Pete, who was a star juvenile, and Rivalland’s charge looks headed for bigger paydays.
Bombardier Boy was a bit green on debut and should be wiser with the experience but does race on the Polytrack for the first time. However, that might not matter as he may be in a different league to his rivals.
Jockey Callan Murray, who takes the ride, had an outstanding weekend, riding three winners at Greyville on Friday, claiming another two at Turffontein on Saturday and another double at HWB Durbanville on Sunday.
