Jack Miner: Dandolo gave the impression he had a bright future when running on strongly to finish a close-up second behind Winter Stories in the KZN Yearling Sale Million (Non-Black Type) over 1300m at Greyville in July.
As a result, there was some talk about his chances a month later in the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes over 1200m but Tony Rivalland’s charge had to first overcome a bad draw. Unfortunately, this he was unable to do and was well beaten, finishing 7.75 lengths behind Erik The Red.
The three-year-old son of Crusade has not raced since but will make his comeback on Wednesday in Race 5, a Novice Plate over 1200m on the Polytrack at Greyville.
The change of surface will not be a concern as Dandolo won on debut on the Polytrack. The three-year-old colt is the best handicapped runner by at least 2kg and if not in need of the run following a 60-day break, he will be hard to beat.
Lyle Hewitson takes the ride.
Deep Thought looks above average, and although she will be taking on the colts, she has to have a winning chance. Anton Marcus takes the ride for trainer Brett Crawford but this will be her first race on the Polytrack.
She does, however, have the advantage of No 1 draw.
Sir Pom is also a very decent runner in the making and now he has been gelded, could show loads of improvement. He runs on strongly in sprints and could thrive running around a turn. He is one to watch.
