Count on Kabral at Cheltenham

January 2026

Kabral Du Mathan can continue his progress for the Skelton team at Cheltenham on Thursday as he takes aim at the the Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle.

Runner-up in the Scottish Champion Hurdle last season for Paul Nicholls, the five-year-old made his debut for his new stable at Haydock in November and could not have been more impressive in winning a handicap by 12 lengths from two subsequent winners.

His revised mark of 154 makes him the highest-rated horse in this Grade Two field and he is expected to strike gold to tee himself up for a likely tilt at the Stayers' Hurdle back at Prestbury Park in March.

On the same card Nicholls will be hoping to land the Ellenborough Park Hotel "Chasing Excellence" Novices' Chase with the promising Regent's Stroll.

The six-year-old has always been well regarded and was Grade One-placed over hurdles, but his chasing debut at Newbury was scuppered by over-enthusiasm.

However, he appeared far more restrained on his second start over the larger obstacles at Wincanton in mid-December, running out a decisive victor over a solitary but talented rival in Jeriko Du Reponet.

He faces a tougher examination, but he certainly has untapped potential in this discipline and Nicholls has his string in good form.

Glengouly bids for back-to-back big-race wins at the home of National Hunt racing in the Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase.

Formerly trained by Willie Mullins, the nine-year-old failed to complete in two of his first three races for Faye Bramley but appears to have been reinvigorated by a wind operation.

He was well beaten on his first start of this season over hurdles at Uttoxeter, but his subsequent third behind Mambonumberfive reads well and he has since finished fourth at Cheltenham and returned to win the December Gold Cup as a 33-1 shot.

While that success was a surprise, there did not appear to be any fluke about that front-running victory over Vincenzo and with champion jockey Sean Bowen on his back again, a 3lb rise does not look insurmountable.

Following a readying run on the Flat, Wise Eagle can make a winning return to the jumping game in the Virgin Bet A Good Bet Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle at Musselburgh, while Joe Tizzard's Hartington holds obvious claims in the £100,000 Fitzdares New Year's Day Handicap Hurdle at Windsor.

The six-year-old made a winning start to his campaign at Carlisle before picking up the silver medal in a Grade Three event at Haydock and a drop back in trip looks a smart move.

On the Flat at Southwell, Mick Appleby's Coul Angel can strike in the Midnite A Next Generation Betting App Handicap.

The three-year-old has won three times since September, with a turf triumph at Newmarket followed by successive all-weather wins at Kempton.

He came up a little short in his hat-trick bid last time after encountering a troubled passage and while he has reached a career-high mark of 95 on both surfaces, he still looks to have more to offer. - Press Association
