Clover Time taken to strike at Sandown

August 2024

Clover Time can put the experience of his recent near miss to good use by getting his nose in front in the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes at Sandown on Thursday.

After finishing in midfield on debut at Bath, the Havana Grey juvenile looked as though he was going to shed his maiden tag at Thirsk when taking the lead with 400m to go.

The Mick Appleby-trained colt was ridden out and kept on well enough, only to be headed in the final strides by Lovat Scout for a 0.5-length reverse.

Appleby is riding on the crest of a wave after beating Aidan O'Brien to the leading trainer crown at Goodwood last week with four winners from his seven runners, with the other three claiming minor honours, so expect a strong performance from Clover Time.

Perennial is targeting a return to the winner's enclosure for Ed Walker in the Boodles Handicap.

The son of Masar, out of a Shamardal mare, claimed a 1-length victory over stablemate Amsterdam over 1400m on debut at Salisbury in June, but could not back that up when stepping up in class and trip at Windsor 18 days later.

Perennial finished a distant fifth of six runners, which has resulted in the Kingsdown Stables handler dropping him back down to his initial distance.

Wild Nature can maintain Charlie Appleby's brilliant form with his two-year-olds this season in the British EBF Maiden Stakes.

The Kingman colt will make his debut over 1600m at the Esher track as in-form Appleby targets another juvenile success.

The Moulton Paddocks handler has a 40 percent strike-rate with his youngsters this campaign, including useful prospects Aomori City, Shadow Of Light and Desert Flower last week.

At Yarmouth, Ellaria Sand will be aiming to secure successive triumphs in an intriguing Ruby Sheales Cup Fillies' Restricted Novice Stakes.

The Archie Watson-trained filly made her debut at the Norfolk racecourse in June, finishing fourth in the hands of jockey Josh Bryan before the pair combined to win by a 1.25-lengths at Newbury last month.

Group One-winning jockey Luke Morris will be aboard the daughter of Sands Of Mali as she steps up to 1400m for the first time.

Open Secret bids to shed his maiden tag in the Star Construction & Maintenance Brighton Challenge Cup Handicap at Brighton.

Charlie Johnston's colt has yet to taste victory in eight career starts but has finished runner-up on three occasions, all at this Class Four level.

The son of Cracksman stepped up in grade at last month's Goodwood Festival with a valiant fourth in the Coral Daily Rewards Shaker Handicap, and if Open Secret can replicate that form here, it could see him challenging for top honours.

Akkadian Thunder heads into Chepstow's Racing League 21 Handicap in fine spirits following a fast-finishing win at Doncaster last time.

On a high-class Leopardstown card, Duke of Edinburgh Stakes winner Crystal Black is targeting a fifth straight triumph in a four-runner field for the Group Three Xin Gin Ballyroan Stakes. - Press Association
