Fairview moved to Polytrack

May 2023

Jack Milner

Following more overnight rain and an average early morning average penetrometer reading of 37.5 from 30 on Thursday, it has been decided to move Friday's meeting scheduled on turf to the Polytrack.

Races 2, 3 and 4 will be run over 1300m. Race 5, being a feature on the day and a Non-Black Type race will remain a 1400m race.

Heading up the nine-race card on the Fairview turf track on Friday is the Listed Milkwood Stakes for fillies and mares over 1000m as well as the Fairview 1400 (Non-Black Type).

There are excellent betting opportunities with TAB this weekend, starting off today with a R200,000 carryover to Jackpot One (Races 5 to 8) with a likely pool of R700,000.

It is always helpful to have a banker in that Exotic as it gives one the opportunity to load the other legs and hopefully find a decent outside.

The Fairview 1400 (Race 5) could provide that banker on the card as talented three-year-old Khaya’s Hope makes a comeback from a 91-day layoff.

This Gavin Smith-trained gelding has won his last four races and has a record of three wins and a short-head second in his four runs over the course and distance. He tends to run well fresh so the layoff should not affect his performance.

S’manga Khumalo takes the ride.

The Milkwood Stakes (Race 7) looks dominated by the visiting runners and Justin Snaith-trained Hunting Trip looks the filly to beat. She has won four of her nine starts, including her last two.

Last time out at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth she beat Body Electric by one length, with Winter Furi seven lengths behind.

Snaith’s charge meets the two on 3.5kg and 4kg better terms respectively and should confirm the form. But this is run on a different course and that can often cough up a different result.

However, jockey JP van der Merwe seems to have found the right ignition button on this Trippi filly as he has ridden Hunting Trip in her last two races for two wins.

The local challenge should come from Phedra, Civil Rights and Red Berry. Phedra has a good cruising speed and could run this field off their feet.
