Cash in on an early Vaal double

April 2023

Jack Milner

There are some incredibly tricky races to test punters at the Vaal on Thursday but hopefully we can build up a kitty with a TAB double in the first two races.

With Ryan Munger getting packed to fly off to Canada shortly, he rode at his last meeting before leaving at Turffontein on Tuesday and performed his parting shot in style with a victory in the final race aboard Laetitia’s Angel.

With trainer Ashley Fortune having lost her stable jockey, Aldo Domeyer will be making the trip from Cape Town to ride for the Vaal-based trainer.

In Race 1, a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1100m, Domeyer is aboard Var gelding Open Highway.

Support for this youngster dwindled before his debut, but he produced an eye-catching performance, finishing 0.75-lengths behind stable companion Rose Tinted. Had he not shifted in late under Kabelo Matsunyane, the outcome could have been different.

He faces mostly newcomers in his second outing and should take a world of beating with that experience under the belt.

In Race 2, a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies, Brett Crawford-trained Wugug looks hard to oppose.

There was a lot to like about her debut performance when finishing a 1.25-length third behind Callmewhenyouneedme. Of course, on form one might argue that on that run, the daughter of Rafeef looks well held by Weichong Marwing-trained Divine Moonlight who finished second in that race, 0.50-lengths ahead of Wugug.

However, Crawford’s charge lost ground at the start and ran on best of all, so massive improvement can be expected with that extra experience under her belt and she is a confident selection to win.
