Candice has a real Player

August 2022

Jack Milner

Fans of the comedy series Monty Python’s Flying Circus might be familiar with their “dissertation” on Australian table wines.

One of them is a sparkling wine called the Perth Pink which they add, “this is a bottle with a message in, and the message is BEWARE! This is not a wine for drinking – this is a wine for laying down and avoiding”.

The Perth Pink label could be attached to a number of racemeetings, and Wednesday’s event on the Polytrack Hollywoodbets Greyville is on that bill of fare.

But we love the sport and go through withdrawal systems on days when there is no local racing. And truthfully, we all love a challenge and there is nothing more satisfying when being faced with a seemingly impossible race card than to crack the code and come away a winner.

So, on this occasion we are going to rely on trainer Candice Dawson as the key to solving this puzzle.

Dawson saddles two runners and both have winning chances. However, the best looks to be Player in Race 2, a Qualified Maiden Plate over 1800m. The name is no accident as this four-year-old son of Toreador runs in the colours of golfing legend Gary Player.

He has only raced four times and they were spread out over an eight-month period beginning in December last year. However, he was the subject of some keen betting support last time and shortened from 14-1 into 9-2.

Player did not run badly in a handicap over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside track, running on to finish sixth, but only 2.25 lengths behind Irrevocable Dreams.

His dam, Krystle Carrington, is by Dynasty and did win over 1800m so the extra distance should suit. Keagan de Melo rode him last time and will be back aboard.
