Candice and Aldo take on Fairview

July 2022

Jack Milner

Following the galloping of four horses on the Fairview turf track, it has been unanimously decided to move the meeting scheduled for Friday to the Polytrack.

It was reported from all riders that the course was patchy in areas which was causing horses to stumble. In view of their feedback the decision was taken in order to secure the safety of both rider and horse.

All distances remained unchanged.

Despite the change of surface Candice Bass-Robinson and Aldo Domeyer will still make the trip to Fairview on Friday where they will team up with four runners.

Bass-Robinson rarely goes home empty handed and it comes as no surprise all four have been installed as short-priced favourites in their respective fields.

The horses concerned are Matsuyamo in Race 1, Echo Of Life in Race 2, Charlie Croker in Race 3 and On The Road Again in Race 8.

They all look competitive but the best of the quartet could be Charlie Croker who runs in a Maiden Plate over 1200m.

The son of Irish sire Myboycharlie, Charlie Croker has raced six times for one second, and three fourth places but even in his two unplaced runs, which came in his first two races, he was not that far behind the winner.

He has been holding his form well and is coming into this race after what was arguably his best performance yet. That was over 1250m at Durbanville where he ran on well to finish a 0.40-length second behind War Banner.

For the next 10 days he is still a two-year-old and therefore gets a 3kg weight allowance from the older horses.

While two-year-olds do not get an official merit rating, the handicappers do keep an unofficial rating and in Charlie Croker’s case, it is 81. Even allowing for the 7.5kg the weight-for-age scale allows two-year-olds at this stage of their careers, he still comes in as the best weighted runner in this line-up.

Their next best looks to be On The Road Again in Race 8, a MR 72 Handicap over 1000m. The three-year-old gelding has dropped to a mark off which he clearly is capable of winning again and only found one better last time out.
