Calla Lagoon backed to cap Beckett's brilliant season

October 2024

Ralph Beckett has undoubtedly enjoyed the best season of his career and he can end it with a flourish at Pontefract on Monday, headlined by Calla Lagoon in the British Stallion Studs EBF Silver Tankard Stakes.

Beckett has been the king of the two-year-olds this year and he has had almost 40 individual winners in that department alone.

The future looks bright ahead of next season then, and Calla Lagoon can sign off with a Listed victory.

Beckett has several colts who look middle distance prospects for next year, including Angelo Buonarroti and Starzintheireyes, so he should have a good line on what is required to win a race such as this.

Calla Lagoon was fifth on debut behind the now 106-rated Yaroogh, but stepped up on that next time when beating the Futurity Trophy-bound Seaplane at Ascot.

Back in third was Too Soon, a winner since and fourth in the Zetland Stakes to Starzintheireyes.

Beckett's Oxford Comma can take full advantage of her allowances in the Phil Bull Trophy Conditions Stakes.

She is the lowest rated in the field but she gets 14lb from each of her rivals here as the only three-year-old filly in the race.

A dual novice winner earlier in the season, Oxford Comma found Group Two company in the Park Hill at Doncaster too big a leap, coming home 14-lengths behind the winner in seventh place.

She is much better judged on her two previous runs, having shown an aptitude for easy conditions in the process, and is worth a chance upped to 3600m.

Historic City disappointed on his most recent run, when beating just one rival as the 11-8 favourite at Kempton.

No excuses could be found following that run, so perhaps it is better to judge on his previous soft-ground maiden win in assessing his chance in Bath's On Course Values Online Dragonbet Handicap.

Mockirr found 1000m a bit on the sharp side recently, so cannot be ruled out back at 1200m in the Sky Sports Racing HD Virgin 519 Novice Stakes at Wolverhampton.

He seemingly had no problems with heavy ground at Windsor when held by 0.75-lengths, but he was keeping on at the finish against familiar rival Maid In Chelsea.

Back at the slightly longer distance, Mockirr might finally get off the mark.

Eavestone likely got bogged down in soft ground at Goodwood and will be much more at home in the Get The Inside Track With raceday-ready.com Novice Stakes at Southwell.

Roger Varian's filly was a fine third to subsequent Group One winner Friendly Soul on her only outing at two and prior to Goodwood had looked like winning at Southwell before being caught late on.

As well as seemingly being unsuited by the soft ground at Goodwood, the winner, Estrange, was in a different league.

Menaggio can make a perfect start over fences in the Nick Embiricos Memorial Handicap Chase at Plumpton.

He won one of his five hurdles starts for Alan King and displayed plenty of promise for a chasing career. - Press Association
