BORN RULER CAN REIGN SUPREME AT REDCAR

May 2025

By Anita Chambers, PA

Born Ruler is one to stay on the right side of in the Racing TV Zetland Gold Cup Handicap at Redcar.

His trainer Sir Mark Prescott has not saddled the winner of this 10-furlong contest since Forward Rally triumphed in 1986, but Born Ruler looked to enjoy the perfect prep run when having his first outing for 288 days earlier this month.

The five-year-old was sent off a 20-1 shot at Newmarket, edging back to nine furlongs after previously racing over 10 furlongs and further in 2024.

He looked a bit ring rusty on his return, giving himself some ground to make up after a tardy start prior to making some reasonable headway before his lack of a recent run told in the finish.

Beaten just over four lengths, the handicapper has eased him 1lb to a mark of 88 and moving back up to a mile and a quarter is a positive factor.

Filly One was successful at Southwell at the start of the month and should be capable of doubling up in the Celebrating 30 Years Of Jacks Coaches Handicap.

From a decent sprinting family, she looked smart at two but then had over a year on the sidelines.

She has shown she retains a fair amount of ability though, with her last-time-out strike coming in most convincing style by four and a quarter lengths.

A 9lb hike for that win presents a challenge, but she is still reasonably rated at 80.

Crown Of Oaks is the pick in the Celebrating The Life Of Colin Brown Maiden Stakes.

He has finished third in each of his two starts so far, but has caught the eye on both occasions as he has been putting in all his best work at the finish.

Beaten just over a length at Newbury in April, that form got a bit of a boost when the winner took second to Bowmark in a novice heat at York's Dante meeting and a similar effort should see him off the mark.

Circe improved for dropping back to six furlongs and stays at the sprint trip in Windsor's Blackmore Design And Build Handicap.

While she is a winner over seven furlongs and a mile in the past, she had fallen short twice already this term and her neck verdict at Newmarket has resulted in a slight uplift of 2lb.

Boatswain can add a second win to his CV in the British EBF Novice Stakes at Leicester.

A novice winner at Lingfield in January, he was beaten a short head on his first turf outing when clearly still learning and can defy a penalty.
