Banker Izibulo in KZN exotics

August 2024

Jack Milner

Bettors will be faced by a competitive card at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday, but trainer Garth Puller could provide everybody with a banker on the card.

He sends out Izibulo in Race 3, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1600m and this daughter of Lancaster Bomber can finally put to bed a trio of runner-up spots and get her first win on the board.

She has only had five runs and has placed on all but one occasion, but what is particularly in her favour is that all but one of her runs have been at this course.

Her last three-races were over 1800m and 1600m and the drop to 1400m could work in her favour as she has been in contention with 200m to run but was run out of it late in those races.

Her last run saw Izibulo finish a 0.90-length second behind Pink Diamond and that form line has been backed up by the fact that fifth-placed Safari Lodge ran out a 4.10-length winner in her next start.

Ant Mgudlwa rode this filly last time and he will be back in the irons once again.

Paul Lafferty would have been delighted the manner in which Immah came from almost 10 lengths back at Hollywoodbets Greyville, flashing up late to also get the third-place cheque, beaten just 1.70 lengths in his debut run.

The winner of that race, Warhead, who races for Alyson Wright looks a decent prospect and that form line could be quite strong.

Puller-trained Apex Predator, who finished 0.60 lengths ahead of him, is also in Race 2, a Maiden Plate over 1000m, but Immah is expected to make good improvement and barring a well-backed newcomer coming good, also rates one of the better bets on the day.

For a bit of value, it could be worth following USA’s Hope in Race 7, a Conditional Graduation over 1200m. Promising youngsters Salt ‘N Peppa and Bourbon Warrior could attract all the attention, but they will be tested at this decent level.

Beamonesque is best weighted and has the talent, but the fact that he only raced three times as a three-year-old and has had four races in total must say something about his soundness.

It could also be the reason why he is best weighted; the handicapper hasn’t had reason to drop him and USA’s Hope who is second best in could take advantage.

He also impressed earlier in his career and has since been up close and personal with horses such as Dean Street, Beechamwood Boy and King Of The Gauls so he could live up to his now-lowered rating.
