An opening for S’manga

August 2022

Jack Milner

Many of the top Cape jockeys are on holiday, either enforced or by design, but S’manga Khumalo is in town, and he looks set to ride a couple of winners at Kenilworth on Saturday.

I’ll Slip Away could get him off to a good start in Race 2, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1000m.

There was no money at all for Greg Ennion’s charge on debut last time but despite that, the daughter of Philanthropist did well to finish fifth, beaten just three lengths by Pacific Green. It was a promising run, especially if one considers she did not have the best of starts.

I’ll Slip Away does meet the strongest of fields and this is an ideal opportunity to get off the mark.

Khumalo is also aboard Dean Street for Lucinda Woodruff in Race 6, a Middle Stakes over 1400m. This Master Of My Fate gelding has only run five times, placing in his first two starts before reeling off three successive victories over 1100m and 1200m.

The four-year-old tries 1400m for the first time but there is no reason why he should not see it out as his dam won over 1400m and there should be no shortage of staying power on his stallion’s side.

Corne Orffer also has some decent rides for Candice Bass-Robinson, including

Rubertus, who is a likely improver after a pleasing debut run, in Race 1, a Maiden Plate over 1000m. Red Impact looks very hard to beat but taking the two in Swingers and Exactas should get punters off to a winning start.

However, that jockey-trainer combination should strike with Silent War in Race 5, a MR 78 Handicap over 1600m, with the well-bred son of Gimmethegreenlight set to make a bold winning bid.

The four-year-old gelding caught the eye when a fast-finishing and close-up second in a stronger race over the same course and distance. He races off the same mark he did on that occasion and should, despite conceding weight to all back in a handicap, return to winning ways.
