ALMOSH'HER TO DELIGHT LOCAL FANS WITH EBOR WIN

August 2025

By Nick Robson, PA

Almosh'her can provide Yorkshire with a winner of its most famous handicap, the Sky Bet Ebor at York.

Trained in Leyburn by Karl Burke, the four-year-old runs in the colours of Qatar's Wathnan Racing operation, a growing force in the game.

They want to be winning the biggest races and while this fits into that bracket with £300,000 to the winner, they bought the gelding hoping he will be plying his trade in Group races sooner rather than later.

Moved to Burke from Charlie Fellowes, who saddled him to win two of his three starts, Almosh'her won on his debut for Burke at the Dante meeting over a mile and a half.

He then went to Royal Ascot but lost all chance before the Duke of Edinburgh by reportedly acting coltish. Unsurprisingly he has since been gelded and may still be on a decent mark as a result.

The Sky Bet City of York Stakes is being run as a Group One for the first time and it has attracted a field worthy of it.

Rosallion's late setback last week is York's gain, while there is surprise Sussex Stakes winner Qirat, last year's Lockinge hero Audience and a classy French raider in Maranoa Charlie all taking their chances.

However, Andrew Balding's Never So Brave has been improving with every race and was a good winner at Group Two level last time out.

He lost his way in the second half of last season with Sir Michael Stoute but Balding appears to have found the key to him and he was a wide margin winner of the Buckingham Palace Stakes before downing Haatem among others in the Summer Mile.

Bowmark can make the most of a drop in company in the Sky Bet Strensall Stakes.

He won a novice at this track earlier in the campaign before going on to tackle the French Derby, where he raced far too keenly and dropped away at the finish to be beaten a total of six and a half lengths.

Switching back to Group Three level and easing slightly in distance to a mile and a furlong can help him get back on the winning track.

The Harry Eustace-trained Sea Of Kings must surely be better than his current rating of 83, which he gets to run off again in the Sky Bet Melrose Stakes.

A brother to the Irish Oaks winner Sea Of Class, he showed more than a hint of ability when placed in three maiden and novice events but was just a little disappointing on his handicap debut behind Push The Limit at Goodwood.

However, he did become upset in the stalls and was always on the back foot as a result. Because of that, he is given one more chance in this 14-furlong contest.

Chief Mankato saw his form boosted when Trefor, who he beat last time, won at York on Wednesday and he is the pick in the Sky Bet Constantine Handicap, while Silent Applause should be followed in the Julia Graves Roses Stakes.

Ryan Moore has been booked by the Gosdens for Westridge in the Sky Bet Steve Birch Finale Handicap and the hint should be taken.
