Aldo, Candice to end season on a high

July 2022

Trainer Candice Bass-Robinson and jockey Aldo Domeyer have enjoyed a largely productive 2021/22 season, which draws to a close with an eight-race card at Kenilworth on Sunday.

The former (sixth) has maintained her status among the top 10 conditioners in the country this term while her stable rider has done likewise and will finish ninth on the jockey’s log.

I
n the Western Cape, only Justin Snaith has saddled more winners and Richard Fourie ridden more winners than Bass-Robinson and Domeyer respectively.

While unable to scoop one of the big prizes on Saturday’s Grade 3 double-header, which brought the curtain down on feature racing in the region this campaign, the combination still celebrated another profitable day’s work that included a double for Domeyer among Bass-Robinson’s three winners.

And history could repeat itself on the final day, as the in-form duo look likely to sign off with several winners each.

Domeyer should strike aboard Paul Reeves-trained Hear My Voice in Race 2 over 1200m, if she can reproduce the sort of form that saw her finish second in a sales race (over the course and distance) behind the exciting We’re Jamming.
She drops back into a maiden and should prove too good for her rivals on the strength of that form.

After three consecutive seconds over 1000m, the step up to 1200m proved a bridge too far for Time Thief filly Country Time. Bass-Robinson’s charge reverts to her preferred distance in Race 4 and should belatedly opener her account under Domeyer and reward her followers.

Stablemate Cracklin’ Rose has been equally frustrating, having found support in her last three starts only to finish second in each of them.

She renews rivalry with familiar foe Treasure Hunt over 1400m in Race 6 and represents good value reunited with Domeyer for the first time in four starts from gate No 1 and in receipt of 3.5kg.
Promising youngsters Tipsy Tarragon and Time Flies have claims and must be included in exotic bets.

Queen Of Sparta, another two-year-old filly who takes on older rivals, can be backed to complete Bass-Robinson’s three-timer and provide Domeyer with a fourth winner on the card in Race 7.
This daughter of Erupt had improved with every outing before opening her account last time out. The runner-up boosted that form with a fluent next-start success which bodes well for the chances of Queen Of Sparta when she makes her handicap debut off a mark of 85 over 1200m.
