Jack Milner: Mike de Kock has never been scared to throw his runners in at the deep end to see if they have what it takes to make it at the top level.
That is what he has done with Al Sakeet in Race 2 at the Vaal on Thursday. The three-year-old Var colt could not have been more impressive when winning on debut and now he will be lining up in a Graduation Plate where he will be taking on some well-performed opposition.
Al Sakeet made his debut on 4 February over 1000m on the Vaal Classic track and there was talk aplenty for this son of Var. He opened in the betting at 1-1 but then surprisingly drifted out to 5-2 by the start of the race.
Hopefully not too many punters were put off by the betting drift because Al Sakeet was always up with the pace and then just drew off to beat Life Goes On by 6.50 lengths. It was not the strongest of fields, but the manner of the victory cannot be faulted.
One has to assume he will improve as a result of the experience so even more can be expected from him this time.
He certainly has the breeding to go all the way as he is a half-brother to 2018 Grade 1 Computform Sprint champion Attenborough. Callan Murray takes the ride.
Al Sakeet only has five opponents and they are headed up by the best-weighted runner Sweet Sensation from the Corne Spies yard. She has plenty of speed and loves this distance as is verified by her form – eight runs, two wins and five places.
Muzi Yeni is aboard this three-year-old Var filly.
The other possible threat should come from ultra-consistent Captain Moresco who has yet to finish out of the first three over this distance.
Transparency from trainers is always appreciated and that is the case with the Paul Peter stable. In Race 4 they saddle first-timer Burmese Tiara in this Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1200m
In the Computaform Peter noted his charge would need the run but that information was given more than a week before the running of the race. Over the last week, the filly has come on very well in work and they now feel confident she should at least run a place in this field.
They have requested this information be relayed to bettors.
