Ajyad an Ace in Leicester pack

August 2023

Ajyad can make it three wins on the bounce in the Visit racingtv.com Handicap on Sunday at Leicester.

Alice Haynes' charge has seemingly found her niche at middle distances this term, having finished a fair fifth on her only juvenile start at a mile (1600m).

Upped to 10 furlongs (2000m) on her return, Ajyad had to settle for second at Newcastle in May, but she wasted little time in getting off the mark at Bath on her next run before adding a second triumph at Hamilton at the end of June.

That second win came over 11 furlongs (2200m) and the official verdict of 1.25-lengths does not really do full justice to the manner of her success.

Raised to a mark of 80, Ajyad returns from a break as she tackles a mile and a half (2400m), but she looks sure to be suited by the distance and is versatile in terms of ground which could be useful given the unsettled forecast.

Seven Questions makes a swift return to action in the Walker & Son Family Funday Nursery Handicap after hacking up at Ripon earlier in the week.

George Scott's juvenile is also on the hat-trick trail having won a novice heat at Yarmouth before making all for a ready 2.5-length verdict under a penalty in Yorkshire on Tuesday.

The Kodiac gelding must shoulder a 6lb penalty on his handicap bow, boosting his mark to 88 in this contest, although the handicapper could well take a sterner view than that when he is reassessed.

Individualism is another two-year-old of note on the Leicester card as he contests the first division of the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Novice Stakes.

A son of Too Darn Hot out of Reckoning, Individualism is a half-brother to owner Dr Jim Walker's Gold Cup hero Subjectivist, as well as Group-race winner Sir Ron Priestley and the smart filly Alba Rose.

While you would expect him to really excel over long trips in due course, Individualism showed plenty of ability on his initial run for Charlie Johnston, chasing home a previous winner in Cerulean Bay over seven furlongs (1400m) at Ayr last month.

Individualism was beaten just under a length there, with the winner's previous experience proving crucial as the selection just drifted across the track a bit in the finish.

He would not need to improve too much to get off the mark and Group One entries later in the campaign indicate the regard in which he is held.

Primeval impressed on her debut at Doncaster and another victory is on the cards in the Ossie And Hutch Memorial Novice Stakes at Windsor.

A daughter of Lope De Vega out of Group One winner Passage Of Time, Primeval counts the smart pair of Time Test and Tempus among her siblings and she seemed another useful family member when landing a six-furlong (1200m) contest from a previous winner on Town Moor last month.

She was due to run at Salisbury subsequently but lost a shoe on the way to the start and had to be withdrawn, prompting Roger and Harry Charlton to reroute her here.

They have resisted the temptation to make a significant leap in company, despite her eyecatching bow, and that decision could pay dividends further down the line, with this appearing an excellent opportunity for another winning experience. - Press Association
