A double on the card at Turffontein

June 2023

Jack Milner

Once again there looks to be some good bets for punters early on Thursday’s card at Turffontein when they race on the Inside track.

That is important because coming up in Race 5 at 13.25 is Jackpot One where a carryover of R250,000 will kick off that Exotic. The pool is likely to reach R1 million.

So, it could be worth getting in early to build up a kitty because the Jackpot races look far more competitive.

The scratching of Butternutenrooiwyn from Race 1, a Work Riders Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1200m, has opened the door for Ashley Fortune-trained Neerah. The filly made good improvement from her debut to finish a 0.80-length third behind Brosnan last time and that should have brought her on.

Her main danger looks to be stablemate Southern Style who despite having her issues, has run some fair races all year and should be involved with the finish.

Red Bomber let down his supporters who went with him in the Grade 1 Gold Medallion at Hollywoodbets Scottsville recently but he was an impressive debut winner and can bounce back in Race 2, a Juvenile Plate over 1450m.

The Scottsville track has caught out a number of horses on its undulating track and that run is best ignored. The Johan Janse van Vuuren-trained son of Lancaster Bomber will appreciate the return to Turffontein and should benefit from the extra distance.

Gavin Lerena has ridden him in both of his starts and is back on board again.
