A star for Bass at Greyville

Western Cape-based trainer Candice Bass has been doing well with her satellite yard in KwaZulu-Natal and she can strike again in Race 5 on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday, a Class 5 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1000m, with Whatastar.

The What A Winter filly made it look easy coming from just under five lengths back to win going away by 2.40 lengths on local debut. She has been given gate No 1 and while she is dropping to 1000m she looks to have a speedy horse to track in Queen’s Pact, who has drawn in gate No 2.

Magical Sky must be a big danger on form, but she hasn’t drawn as well, and apprentice Damyan Pillay may have his work cut out as he rides her for the first time.

Another decent bets comes up in Race 2, an Open Maiden for fillies and mares over 1400m. Keagan de Melo rides Declarationofpeace filly Vaans Spirit for veteran conditioner Dennis Bosch.

Vaans Spirit who on debut produced the second fastest finish in a competitive 1200m maiden on the turf at Hollywoodbets Scottsville and showed that was no fluke when improving to be the fastest finisher when dropped in the deep end in her next start.

She was upped to 1600m in just her second outing but not only was she taking on much more experienced individuals she also had to give 5kg and start to eventual winner Praise De Lay Rey. She was a bit unlucky as she didn’t have the best of passages but this time round, she has gate two and looks to be meeting a weaker field.
