When the field was declared for the Listed Glenlair Trophy over 2800m it looked as if it could be a match race between Alan Greeff-trained Barak and Glen Kotzen’s raider Flower Of Saigion, but that got blown away when both runners were scratched from the race.
Barak was reported to be lame off fore while the Kotzen-trained runner fell victim to the new outbreak of African Horse sickness and was not allowed to travel.
That has opened the race somewhat but it has given the mercurial Jaeger Moon a chance to pick up a decent feature at Fairview on Friday.
He was only beaten 0.25-lengths by Barak over 2700m last time so we do know he stays. He has not won a race since May last year but with S’manga Khumalo in the irons for in-form trainer Gavin Smith, the five-year-old gelding can finally find his way back to the winner’s enclosure.
The dangers appear to be Magnum Fire and Origami.
Cruise Control and Cliff Top meet again in Race 6, the Fairview Flying Five over 1000m. At the moment Cruise Control leads the head-to-head 3-2.
Cruise Control proved 0.75 lengths too speedy when they met last month and with the weights changing by 0.5kg in Cliff Top’s favour it could just work in his favour but he will need some help from rival Phedra.
Cruise Control likes to dominate his rivals and if speedy Phedra can exert some early pressure it could be left to Cliff Top to fly past them at the finish.
Nevertheless, had it been 1200m we would have given the advantage to Cliff Top but over 1000m, Cruise Control could be a Pick 6 banker on a really tricky card.
It could be a great day for Smith who can also claim the Derby Plate over 2000m with impressive Perfection.
