4Racing joins in spirit of Mandela Day

July 2023

In keeping with the ethos of “charity begins at home” 4Racing on Tuesday celebrated Nelson Mandela Day by providing 300 warm meals for pupils and teachers at The Hamlet School, which focuses on uplifting learners with intellectual disabilities and their families.

The Hamlet School is situated just 800m from 4Racing’s headquarters at the Turffontein Racecourse and the racing operator’s staff dedicated their 67 minutes marking Mandela Day by supporting the school which since 1954 has been integral in providing specialised education for thousands of intellectually disabled schoolchildren in the broader Turffontein community.

“Located just a stone's throw away from our headquarters, the Hamlet School holds a special place in our hearts. It is a remarkable institution that strives to uplift learners with intellectual disabilities and their families. Through our partnership on Mandela Day, we aim to support their noble efforts and in so doing contribute to the betterment of the Turffontein community. At 4Racing, we believe true success goes beyond financial gains and profits; it lies in creating a positive impact on the lives of others and the positive change we bring to society. Our commitment to corporate social responsibility is deeply ingrained in our values, and we are dedicated to giving back to the communities that have supported us throughout our journey,” said 4Racing Chief Executive Officer, Fundi Sithebe.

The relationship between 4Racing and Hamlet School is an established one, as the school is one of the beneficiaries of the annual Allied Steelrode On A Mission Charity Mile, which will take place at Turffontein this year on Saturday 28 October.

The decision to partner with the Hamlet School is in line with the Mandela Day theme this year of ‘Climate, Food, and Solidarity’.

“As we face the ongoing challenges of poverty, inequality, and unemployment, it becomes imperative for businesses to step forward and make a positive difference in the communities they operate in. 4Racing firmly believes in the power of corporate social responsibility and its role in uplifting society. Mandela Day reminds us of the values of democracy, justice, and equality that Nelson Mandela so passionately fought for. It is an honour for 4Racing to be a part of this special occasion and contribute towards creating a just and fair society for all,” Sithebe concluded.

The Hamlet School principal, Annelize Wilsnach, said the school was really appreciative of the 4Racing gesture to mark Mandela Day with the school and hoped it would be the start of strengthening the neighbourly relationship even further.

“It was a wonderful experience, especially for our kids. It is really special to have neighbours such as 4Racing close to us, with whom we now start a new beginning and can build a lasting relationship. Thank you for involving us and ensuring our learners can also be part of Mandela Day and for really blessing our learners with warm soup, fresh rolls, fruit and tinned food. We are really very appreciative and hopefully you will be back next year to also mark Mandela Day at our school,” said Wilsnach.
